Jetsam: artist’s book

I made this artist’s book for artist Doris Rohr‘s PhD exhibition. Having discussed the theme of the book with me, Doris sent me her text block – complete with beautiful translucent drawings of flotsam and jetsam washed up on the seashore – and the embossed, crispy linen paper for the cover.

The binding is an altered pamphlet binding which leaves white linen threads exposed along the spine and trailing out at different lengths from the centre holes. I felt this style complemented the fibrous nature of the drawings inside and also the embossed fishbone ribs on the cover.

I also created a simple card slipcase to protect the book when not in use. The case is covered with one of her drawings, tying the whole project together, inside and out. This handmade artist’s book measures 25 x 35 x 1.5 cms.
