1916 prints: archival box
I have just finished a commission for an archival box to store a series of 32 prints by artist Morgan Doyle. The prints are being exhibited as part of ‘Little Stories, little prints‘ exhibition. Almost 50 printmakers from around Ireland were asked to respond to theme focusing on little-known events or incidents during or around the time of the Easter Rising in 1916 in Ireland.
Morgan Doyle created 32 collaged lithographs which will be presented in this box to Kilmainham Goal, where the leaders of the 1916 rising were executed. There is one print for each of the counties in Ireland and this box is custom-made to hold the collection.
The clamshell box has the artist’s initials M.D. on the front, along with the inscription 1916. I decided to use two different shades of green on the box – a brighter, flecked green for the cover and a darker, browny green for the inner trays. The darker green reminds me of the colour of Irish solider’s uniforms from around this time which seemed especially appropriate for this project.
The exhibition was on display in the Little Museum of Dublin and other venues around Ireland during 2016. This handmade archival box measures 35 x 35 x 4 cms.
